Measure your typing speed and improve where it counts
The typing test measures how fast and how accurately you type: in words per minute (WPM) and in characters per minute, the unit used by Swiss and German employers and schools. You type in English, German, French, Italian or Spanish, accents included, on your own keyboard. Every number comes from the recorded sequence of your keystrokes; results stay on your device.
Test types
- Time
- 15, 30, 60 or 120 seconds of common words in the chosen language, optionally with punctuation and numbers such as 1,250.50 or 28/10/2026. The clock starts with the first letter.
- Words
- 25, 50 or 100 words; the test ends with the last word and the time is measured.
- Text
- Whole paragraphs with capitals, punctuation and numbers: correspondence, everyday life, technology, numbers and dates, short, medium or long.
- Own text
- Paste any text, such as a cover letter or a section of a contract. Typographic quotes and dashes can be turned into keyboard characters.
- Training
- Six lessons by keyboard row (home row, top and bottom row, numbers, capitals or accents, punctuation) with targets, plus practice built from your weak keys and mistyped words.
How it is calculated
Net WPM = characters of correct words including spaces ÷ 5 ÷ minutesA word only counts when it is exactly right. Five characters count as one word, which makes languages comparable.Characters per minute = characters of correct words including spaces ÷ minutesThe same performance without dividing by five: 60 WPM equals 300 characters per minute.Raw WPM = all typed characters ÷ 5 ÷ minutesCounts every keystroke, including wrong ones and those corrected later; it shows pure finger speed.Accuracy = correct keystrokes ÷ all keystrokes × 100A corrected error is still an error. Backspace is not counted.Consistency = 100 × (1 − standard deviation ÷ mean)Taken from the raw speed of every full second: the steadier the rhythm, the closer to 100 %.
Example: a 60 second test
In 60 seconds, 60 words of five characters are typed correctly. Three times a wrong letter is fixed at once, and two more words are left with one error each.
| Keystrokes | 313, of which 5 wrong |
|---|---|
| Net WPM | 60 |
| Characters per minute | 300 |
| Raw WPM | 62.6 |
| Accuracy | 98.4 % |
The two wrong words do not count towards net speed; the three corrected errors only lower the accuracy.
The analysis
- Speed per second
- The line shows net speed from the start up to each second, the columns the raw speed of each single second, red marks the errors.
- Errors on the keyboard
- Each key is tinted by the share of missed characters, on the layout you choose: US, UK, Swiss German or French, German, French, Italian or Spanish. A character typed with a dead key counts on both keys.
- Words
- The words with the most errors, with what was typed, and the slowest words.
- History
- Personal bests per test and language, the last 100 results as a chart, CSV export and a result card as PNG.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good score?
People who do not touch type often reach 25 to 35 WPM. Many office jobs ask for around 40 WPM with high accuracy, and practised touch typists reach 60 and more. A steady pace above 95 % accuracy matters more than a single peak.
Do accents work with my keyboard?
Yes. You type into a real text field, so dead keys, AltGr, input methods of the operating system and phone keyboards all work. An é counts as one character even when it takes two keys.
Can I go back into a word I already typed?
Into a wrong word, yes: Backspace at the start of a word goes back into the previous word as long as it contains an error. A word typed correctly stays finished. Ctrl or Alt with Backspace deletes the whole word.
Where are my results stored?
Only in the browser on this device. There is no account and nothing is sent. The history can be exported as CSV and cleared at any time.
How do I restart?
Escape restarts at any time, Tab during a test. Same text repeats the text so that you can compare an improvement directly.
