Online whiteboard: draw together, live and encrypted
A whiteboard in the browser that you share with others by link. Everyone sees strokes, shapes and text at the same moment. The content is end-to-end encrypted and stays in the browsers of the people taking part; you save it as a file and open it again later.
Drawing aids
- Shape recognition
- Hold still for a moment at the end of a stroke: a drawn circle becomes a circle, a box a rectangle with right angles, a stroke a straight line. Triangle, diamond, ellipse and arrow are recognised too, scribbles stay ink. Recognition uses geometry only.
- Connectors
- Arrows and lines attach to shapes and follow them when they move. Elbow connectors find their way around other shapes. A click on the plus next to a shape places a connected copy beside it, ready for its label.
- Snapping
- While moving, the selection lines up with the edges and centres of other elements and keeps equal spacing, on request also on the grid.
- Ruler
- A ruler to draw along, turning in 15° steps. A stroke along its edge comes out perfectly straight.
- Pen and touch
- Pressure-sensitive ink with Apple Pencil and other pens. While a pen is in use, fingers only move the view and the palm does not draw.
The live session
- Inviting
- Copy the link, show the QR code or send it through the device’s share menu. Nobody needs an account.
- Encryption
- The key sits in the part of the link after the # and never leaves the browser. Every message is encrypted with AES-GCM; the server only sees an anonymous room id, relays encrypted data and stores nothing.
- Presence
- Pointers with names, a laser pointer that fades, and the list of everyone present.
- Follow and present
- Following a person shows you their view. When someone presents, everyone follows them.
- Joining later
- Whoever arrives later receives the whole board from the people present. After a dropped connection the browsers catch up with each other, without duplicated or lost changes.
Example: a workshop for three
Anna starts the session on her laptop. Bruno joins with his tablet through the QR code, Carla half an hour later through the copied link.
| Invitation link | 128-bit room id and 256-bit key after the # |
|---|---|
| A stroke being drawn, two people | every 48 ms, it visibly grows for the others |
| A stroke being drawn, three people | every 108 ms, so that the connection stays within its limits |
| Carla joins | the whole board from Anna, compressed and in parts of at most 110 kB |
| A photo on the board | at most 1600 pixels on its long side and 1.2 MB, sent encrypted |
| At the end | .board file, PDF in A4 or A3, SVG or PNG at double resolution |
After the session the board stays saved in each of the three browsers. The file contains every element with its editing state and the images; whoever opens it sees exactly the same board.
Saving and export
- Board file
- A versioned .board file that holds the complete board. Open it from the menu or by dropping it onto the canvas.
- Vector PDF in A4 or A3, portrait or landscape, with embedded fonts: everything, the selection, or each frame on a page of its own.
- SVG and PNG
- SVG as vector graphics, PNG at double resolution, with a white or transparent background.
- In the browser
- Every change is saved on the device a moment later, also after a session ends. Recently opened boards are listed in the menu.
Frequently asked questions about the whiteboard
Is the whiteboard free?
Yes. It runs in the browser and needs neither an account nor an installation.
Who can read along?
Only people with the complete link. The key sits after the # and never reaches a server; the relay only sees an anonymous room id and encrypted data.
How many people can draw at the same time?
The whiteboard is built for small teams. With every additional person the browsers send pointer movements a little less often so that the connection stays stable; changes to the board always arrive.
What happens if the connection drops?
You keep drawing. As soon as the connection is back, the board catches up with the others, with nothing duplicated or lost.
Does it work on an iPad and a phone?
Yes. On a phone the toolbar sits at the bottom, two fingers pan and zoom, and a two-finger tap undoes the last step.
